If your computer has gotten slower than a snail crawling through molasses I have good news for you. There is no reason to put up with a slow PC any longer! Your computer wasn’t that slow when you got it. I’m going to show you how to speed up your slow computer to where it will run as fast as it used to be when you first got it – if not faster – using free tools. Here are the 6 easy steps I take to speed my own computer up. If you don’t want to go through all the hassle skip to step 6 where I’ll link you to the easiest and best free scan that will do all the work for you!
1) Clean up old files on your computer
The first step to getting your PC to go faster is to clean up old files. As your computer gets used there are files that build up over time that will eventually make your computer run slow. We’ll clear out system files in a bit but first let’s go through and manually delete any files that you know that you no longer need. I start with files I’ve saved on my desktop, then I go through the downloads folder, videos folder, music folder, and finally documents. Just click on the unwanted file and hit the delete key or right mouse click and choose delete in the menu that comes up. For a more in depth look at going through and deleting files, see my article on how to free space on hard drive. Now we’ll get rid of some of the harder to get to system files. Lucky for you Windows has a built in file cleaner that will make cleaning old computer system files easy. This tool is called the Disk Cleanup Tool.
To open Windows Disk Cleanup Click
Start>All Programs> Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup
As you can see here it automatically selected Temporary Files. For now I will just choose to include the Recycle Bin by clicking the check box next to it. For more information on operating the disk cleanup tool, see our guide about using it here. Click Clean Up System Files
2) Run a virus scan
Let’s make sure there aren’t any viruses lurking around your computer making it slow. Make sure to update your virus definitions and antivirus software to the latest version. I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials which is a free antivirus solution for Windows computers. You can download it here:
Here is our guide to get rid of viruses.
3) Run Windows Updates
The operating system on your computer will often slow down over time. That is why companies like Microsoft will often release updates. Updates are a collection of bug fixes and patches that streamline the way your OS functions making your computer faster.
To check for updates Click Start>All Programs> Windows Update
4) Clean your Registry
The Windows Registry is a database that stores how your Operating System is set up for a particular user. Over time your registry will get filled up with outdated settings, information, and associations that will make your computer take longer to operate. I liken it to the front desk at a hotel. If the front desk is all disorganized it will take longer to get to your room. Download and run a registry scanner to clean up your registry and make your computer run faster. Here is the one I use and therefore recommend.
5) Defragment your Hard Drive
Now that we’ve gone through and cleared up old system files, ran a virus scan, run windows update, and cleaned up that registry, that should have put your computer’s hard drive through a lot of changes. That means it’s time to defragment your hard drive. To find your defrag program that comes with Windows Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Windows Defragmenter
6) Easy Fast Free Scan All-in-One
I know that the above steps are not for everybody. That’s why I’ve decided to share my “secret weapon” programs that will take care of all of the above and more!
