You’ve come to a point where you know that you’re computer has slowed. Before you can actually fix your slow computer by speeding it up, it is helpful to know the actual causes of a slow computer. The process of finding out the causes of a problem is known as troubleshooting, and is the first step to fixing a slow computer. Below I will go through the top 10 causes of why your computer is running slow. Note that these are mostly aimed at a computer that is slow after it is already on. We will have another article for a slow computer start up.
1) Low Hard Drive Space
Your computer’s hard drive is the place where all of your computer’s files are permanently stored until they are used or deleted by either you or programs running on your computer. There is only so much space available on your Hard Drive so when it gets close to being full it will cause your computer to be slow. Think of your computer as a house. Think of the stuff in the house as files. Now imagine that the house is slam full of stuff. Now imagine that you had to bring one thing in the house from one room to the other. You would need to maneuver through all that stuff and it would take a long time, if you could even get through the tight squeezes at all. When your computer’s hard drive is full it’s the same way for all the files on it. That is why a full hard drive will make your computer slow down.
2) Fragmented files
Your computer’s hard drive is shaped like a record or a compact disc. When your computer starts to save files to the hard drive, it usually starts in one spot and slowly spirals out to the edge as it gets more full. Over time, files get erased and moved from one place to another. This breaks files up and spreads them out. This makes your computer have to skip around to different parts of the hard drive to save and open files. So instead of moving smoothly along to one file after another, the computer slows down going from on place and another trying to open files. This is known as a Fragmented Hard Drive.
3) Software Out of Date
Often times, programs on your computer can have various different problems that either aren’t found until after it’s released or that happen over time due to some kind of programming flaw. This happens to all software from your computer’s Operating System, all the way down to your web browser. Your computer can run into these software problems without you even knowing it until they cause your computer to mess up and slow down.
4) Too Many Programs Running at Once
Every program that is running on your computer, either seen or unseen, takes up your computer’s resources. Often times this is cause by just opening too many programs at once. Sometimes the computer is set to open and run programs by itself. Whether it’s one or the other or a combination of the two, once these resources get close to being all used up your computer will operate much slower.
5) Malicious programs like Adware, Spyware, Malware or Viruses
These are programs that are bad for your computer. They run in ways that negatively affect your computer’s performance. Often times they run secretly in the background. Sometimes they even try to be bothersome so that you will give them personal information like a credit card number in the hopes that the annoyance will stop. All of these are bad news if you want a speedy computer.
6) Not enough RAM
RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is where all of your open files and programs are stored while they are in use. Think of it like human short term memory. Everything that your computer is actively using is stored in the RAM. So if you’re filling up almost all of your computer’s RAM, your computer is going to have to slow down.
7) Processor Underpowered for Software Recommendation
Some software, especially if the software is newer and your computer is older, will be too much for your computer’s hardware to handle. This will make your computer run slow if it can run at all. Think of it like trying to pull a trailer full of tons of bricks with a lawnmower. Not gonna be pretty.
8 ) Computer is Overheating
When your computer runs, it generates heat. It’s just like when your car runs for a while it gets warm. And, just like a car, if it get’s too hot it will quit working, or not work as well at least. This means a slow computer.
9) Registry Errors
A computer registry is a database that stores all the files and settings for your computer’s main software called the Operating System. It is the central brain of all your computers software. When there is a problem with your registry, it will effect the performance and speed of everything on your computer.
10) Hardware Issue
Computers are complex machines made up of thousands of little components and parts that make up the physical part of the computer known as the Hardware. If there is a hardware malfunction, any number of things could go wrong with one or more of the smaller components in or on your computer that could actually be the cause of your slow computer.
